A Minna based environmentalist Prof. Godwin Nnaemeka Nsofor has raised an alarm over the increasing rate of deforestation in the country warning that it will create unhealthy trend to the environment.

Speaking at the occasion of world environmental and tree planting day held at the Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE), office in Minna, yesterday, Prof. Godwin Nsofor stated that in the nearest future deforestation will be imminent in the country.

He stressed the need for Nigerians to plant trees annually to ensure the safety and the preservation of the environment noting that by so doing, the environment “our environment would be preserved from deforestation.”

According to the environmentalist, by planting one tree by ten persons annually, it will go a long way in preserving the the environment in the next 10 years stressing that it has added great values against deforestation.

Prof.Nnaemeka Nsofor, who is the dean, faculty of environmental studies at the federal University of technology (FUT), Minna, requested relevant non-governmental organization (NGOs) and all critical stakeholders on the preservation of our environment to as a matter of necessity forward a private bill to the National Assembly to enact law that will mandate every Nigerian to plant at least a tree towards the preservation of the environment.

Speaking earlier, head of RCE in Minna, Dr. Abdul Hussaini explained that June 5th of every year was set aside as the world environmental day by the United Nations to among other things ensure the preservation of the environment against deforestation

He stated that RCE as a critical stakeholder in the campaign against deforestation along with green fingers deemed it necessary to ensure the success of this year’s world environmental day.

Dr. Abdul, who is the permanent secretary in the state ministry of lands and Housing, emphasized the importance of tree planting in the socio economic development stressing the need for every Nigerian to imbibe the habit of planting a tree.

Highlight of the event include the planting of trees along the three arm zone in Minna, and some selected areas within and outside Minna as well as presentation of the green fingers anthem by the green fingers kids.
