RUGBY PLAYERBy Our Correspondent

A promising Nigeria rugby player who plies his trade for the Lagos warrior team has had his career cut short due to his involvement in trying to assist his community by engaging in the neighbourhood watch within his area.

Mr Olukayode Edu who until 2016 was one of the best strikers in his team got himself involved in the protection of life and property of the people around his community but little did he know that his playing career would be cut short with his involvement in the neighbourhood watch

Narrating the ordeal that made him quit sports completely Mr Olukayode said “I join a neighbourhood watch with the intention of helping my community; little did I know that I was toeing with my sporting career because in November 2016 only God help me to escape death from abductors. “

Continuing he said “Our team rescue a woman from being killed and it was later gathered that the woman we rescued on November 4, 2016, was the wife of a prominent politician and a candidate for local government council chairmanship election under Ikorodu South Local Government.

Even though the Lagos rugby union has some sailing of assistance from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the woman that was rescued by my team have ìn one way or the other been generous to the cause of promoting the game of rugby in Lagos and its environ.

“After the rescue operation by the neighbourhood watch, attention was shifted to me as a search team was put in place by government security agents that visited our house in my village, Epe in Lagos state, killed my aged mother when they could not find me there.

And recently on January 17, 2021, some members of the neighbourhood watch that participated in the rescue of the woman was also attacked and one member called Solomon Lasisi died during the attack.

I am afraid that I would be killed as I do not feel safe anywhere in Nigeria due to the activities of some faceless thugs that have the network and support from both ìn and around Lagos whose activities though have not only deter me from my sporting career it has also made me unsafe to work around peacefully.
