WEIGHT LIFTINGBy Our Correspondent

Niger State Triple-Gold Medalist in weightlifting at the ongoing National Sports Festival (NSF), Emmanuel Apa has called on the state government to provide more support and motivation towards boosting athletes morale.

Apa, speaking to journalists at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City said that the athletes passed through rigorous training exercise as a result of inadequate sports facilities in the state.

He said that within the short period they were prepared by their coaches for the festival was what led them to perform this far.

“With the short period our coaches put on us, you could see the result that came up.

“So I believe if the government can also assist with more support to the athletes in their training, financially there will be more records in next edition.

The gold medalist added that there was need for facilities to be provided in the state as athletes have to go to another state to train.

“Seriously we don’t have equipment; this is very bad as most of us go out of the state to train before returning to represent the state which is not proper. So I plead with the government to provide more equipment for our training,” he pleaded.

On his feat achieved, he said that it was due to his commitment, hard work, adherence to training techniques of the coaches as well as prayers.

Meanwhile, Gabriel Idaho has won the bronze medal for Team Niger in the 73kg Category of Clean and Jerk of the weightlifting.

Elated Idaho said that he is happy with the achievement as he had patiently waited for a medal.

He said that it is the result of hard work and patient that won him the medal.
