Wife of the Niger state governor, Dr. Amina Abubakar Sani Bello has said that  for every family, community and nation to have an aged living in their midst is a blessing, as they are sources of inspiration and role models who provides sound advice due to their enormous wealth of experience.

Dr. Amina Abubakar Bello stated this during the celebration of 2020 international day for the older persons in Niger state, organized by the Niger State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.

Dr. Amina who was represented by the wife of the Secretary to the State Government, Hadiza Mohammed Shiru reiterated that older persons are regarded as the custodians of our great cherished culture and traditions and they needed our able attention, care, support, and love.

She called on the younger persons not to distance themselves from the aged but tap from their good knowledge, experience and values.

“The older persons have made several sacrifices for our generation to survive without which the growth and development we are witnessing today in our families, communities and nation would not be possible,” she added.

In her address, the commissioner, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Fati Tasallah Ibrahim stated that older persons had contributed positively in their various capacities to the growth and development of our great Nation.

She said, old age is not a crime or a disease but a process, a natural phenomenon, when people grow older, their strength becomes weaken and productivity drops.

She challenged the younger persons to have a change of perception over old age as it is not the end of life neither a death sentence but look at old age with pride and see it as a second phase of life.

Gift items which include, umbrellas, clothing and cash were given to the older persons that came from various local government areas across the state.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Hajiya Hassana Bello appreciated the Niger State Governor and his wife for their care and provision for them.

The permanent secretary of the ministry, Hajiya Kaltume Dauda Rufa’i thanked the governor for his magnanimity towards the older persons and citizens of the state.
