Niger state House of Assembly committee on works and infrastructure said there were serious discrepancies between projects on paper and what’s on the ground.

Members of the committee in a meeting with officials of Ministry of Works and Infrastructural Development led by the Commissioner, Engr Mohammed Panti at the state House of Assembly, observed that money approved and released for certain projects do not tally with what was on the ground.

Member representing Bida II, Hon. Mohammed Alh. Haruna told the ministry officials that documents submitted by the ministry did not contain details of projects executed even when huge amount of money was seen to be released.

He said the house committee will soon embark on oversight tour to ascertain the level of execution of projects vis-a-vis the money expended, hence the need for the ministry of works to provide detailed explanation to guide members.

The chairman of the committee, Hon. Jibrin Ndagi Baba lamented the level of lack of tidiness in projects said to be executed and what’s in the record of the ministry.

He said both the house and the ministry agreed during their last meeting that for the interest of the state and the fact that huge amount of money was said to be expended for roads and other works, the cooperation and support of the both arms was important.

He assured them that the committee assignment was not meant to witch-hunt anybody and pleaded with them to do away with such mindset.

He directed the ministry officials to go back and return with details of their activities from 2016 to date.

It will be recalled that the House of Assembly members during the last meeting with the ministry officials, berated the officials for incompetency in handling such an important sector and demanded openness and transparency as to guide them in the oversight functions.
