Niger State delegation at the 10th World Urban Forum, UAE.

The 10th World Urban Forum organized by the United Nations Human Settlements Programmed (UN-HABITAT) holds from today, the 7th-14th of February in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirate (UAE).

The Secretary to the Government of Niger State (SSG), Ahmed Ibrahim Matane is leading a high powered delegation to attend the conference.
Speaking to newsmen shortly before his departure at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Matane explained that the participation of the state government at the Forum will enhance the existing collaboration between the Niger State Government and UN-Habitat on the implementation of the State Urban Policy (SUP).
He explained that the Forum is designed to expand dialogue between a wider range of partners and cities on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the state, adding that Niger State is the first entity to develop and formulate sub national urban policy.
The SSG further revealed that other projects been developed include the pilot integrated development plan for the cities of Minna and Suleja as well as a smart city project in Suleja with three components building the city. The components are the establishment of assembly plant for renewable system such as solar panels, refrigerators, fans and inverters among others. Government according to him is setting up Institute of Technology aimed at training youth in the state on how best to assemble, repair and market the renewable systems and components.
Matane said a total of 11,000 hectres of land have been acquired for the smart city project, adding that the South Korean Government has given the state a grant of 1.7 million dollars for the feasibility study, master plan and construction of drainages at the smart city.
It would be recalled that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the state government and UN-Habitat was signed on November 29, 2017 in Nairobi, Kenya.
The SSG is accompanied by the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Lands and Housing, Mouktar Nasale, Permanent Secretary, Economic Affairs, SSG’s Office, Babawachiko Yahaya, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Lands and Housing, Abdul Hussaini and Coordinator, Niger State Urban Support Programme, SSG’s Office, Mustapha Zubairu.
