Niger State Commissioner for Water Resources and Dams Development, Hon. Yusuf Suleiman has said that Effective Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (E-WASH) project is the solution to all the numerous challenges bedeviling water sector in the state.

The Commissioner stated this during the second Knowledge Café (Mu Gana) interactive programme of E-WASH, held at Legbo Kutigi International Conference Centre, Minna, recently.

He disclosed that when he met with the E-WASH team on his assumption in office months ago, he knew that the project which is all encompassing was the best thing that could ever happen to the water sector if fully implemented.

The commissioner further stated that provision of water is capital intensive and as such the sector must partner with relevant organizations both within and outside the shores of the country which the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) E-WASH programme is one.

“Water issue is one thing that no state government can shoulder alone, there has to be partnership if we really want to succeed,” he said.

While appreciating all those who were contributing to ensure potable and accessible water service delivery in the state, particularly the WASH Champion members in the state, Suleiman added that his ministry was ready to work with people who are passionate about water service delivery in the state.

Similarly, a former Secretary to the Government of Niger State, Mr. Daniel Clifford Shashere who is one of the WASH Champions promised to work alongside the ministry of water resources and the state water board to actualize their mandates.

He observed that when one is passionate about something he does everything within his reach to ensure that it work, adding that they will continue to give their support to the water sector in the state and appreciated the state water board for recognizing their contributions to the sector.

There were presentations from heads of various units of the state water board, with the lead presentation made by a renowned expert in the water sector, Engr. Inuwa Musa Kuta who talked on the topic, “Sustainable Water Resources and Sanitation Management: A Panacea for Job Creation.

There were also theme based group discussions and presentation, as well as induction of the WASH Champions. Members of the WASH Champions include Engr. Inuwa Musa Kuta, Mr. Daniel Clifford Shashere, Alh. Shaka Adaba, Hajiya Hauwa Kulu Usman, Engr. Lucky Barau and Alh. Shu’aibu Baba, who founded a group known as “water guard.”
