Niger State Commissioner for Water Resources and Dams Development, Alh. Yusuf Suleiman has asked the staff of the agencies under his ministry to sit up and be proactive.

The commissioner stated this when he led management of the Ministry on a familiarization visit to Niger State Water Board and Rural Water and Sanitation (RUWATSAN) Agency, Wednesday.

At water board, the commissioner said he had no doubt that they have the capacity to make water board work and provide water to Nigerlites, particularly at the urban centres, adding that he was happy that E-wash was around and asked the board to leverage on its advantage.

He urged the staff of the board to sit up, saying a lot had been spent on procurement and supply of equipment including high and low pumping machines.

The commissioner told the staff of the board that he will not witch-hunt anyone but that he will trail them both formally and informally, assuring them that the government will do its best to provide whatever that is  needed for them to carryout their duties effectively.

Responding to some of the demands of the staff, Suleiman said they should give him between now and the expiration of the 90 days target of the board, adding that he observed that the staff were willing to work but lacking the tools to work.

He solicited for their support and co-operation, saying let us work together and things will improve to bring back the lost glory of the board and promised that more young hands would be recruited to beef up the manpower requirement of the board.

Earlier, the General Manager of the state Water Board, Engr. Hassan Mohammed Chado said it was a home coming for the commissioner haven served earlier as the Project manager, special intervention on water.

He also informed the commissioner that water provision was capital intensive and that a lot had been spent on the sector, adding that they were poised to make water sector an envy of others.

Engr. Hassan Chado said their mission statement is to make the state water board a world class water utility and they hope to achieve that in the tenure of the commissioner, assuring him of support from the entire members of the board.

At the RUWATSAN Agency, the commissioner said he hoped to see a better RUWATSAN urging them to prepare their minds towards working together and that he will monitor the activities of the agency closely, demanding to know how many of the boreholes drilled by the agency were working effectively.

While assuring them of good working relationship, the commissioner also promised to do his best to improve the working condition of the agency and urged them to put the people’s interest above theirs, warning that anyone caught shortchanging the people will be dealt with.

The General Manager of RUWATSAN, Mrs. Rahila K. Iliya appreciated the commissioner for the visit and assured him of their support and co-operation to succeed, saying the commissioner’s success is the success of all agencies of the ministry.
