Niger State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mal. Mohammed Sani Idris has said that he will ensure that the three state-owned media organizations function effectively.

The commissioner stated this while taking over the mantle of leadership at the state ministry of information, Monday, added that without the media organizations no one will know what the government was doing.

He observed that people are ignorant of what the government was doing due to lack of proper dissemination of information, saying the mandate of the ministry was to propagate government policies and programmes and also keep people abreast about the activities of the government of the the day.

“I will work hard to see that the three state government-owned media organizations work effectively because without them no one will know what the government is doing,” said the new commissioner.

The commissioner promised to provide conducive environment for staff of the ministry to work effectively, adding that staff welfare would be pursued with vigour and given utmost priority.

“Only when this is done that the ministry will demand productivity from the staff”, he added.

Mal. Sani Idris also said the ministry under his leadership will resuscitate and sustain the bi-weekly press briefing tagged ‘Stewardship’ initiated by the ministry, saying the only way to keep people abreast with the happenings in the state was through the stewardship programme.

Similarly, the commissioner has assured that the state library would be repositioned to enable it function effectively so as to partner with institutions; promising to strengthen the existing relationship between the ministry and other media organizations, as well as correspondents of various media organizations in the state, in addition to that, the commissioner said that he will operate an open door policy so that everyone would be able to ask what they want to ask and know what they need to know.

However, the commissioner would soon embark on familiarization visit to all the agencies under the ministry so as to have a first hand knowledge of the current situation of the agencies and assured that with the support of all, information dissemination in the state will be in Next Level in no distant time.

Earlier, while welcoming the commissioner to the ministry, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mal. Ibrahim Isah Bala assured the new commissioner of the support and co-operation of all staff of the ministry.

Similarly, the Managing Director of the only state-owned newspaper, Newsline Newspaper, Mal. Ndama Abubakar who spoke on behalf of all heads of the agencies under the ministry said the current situation of the agencies, particularly the media organizations did not start with this administration.

He said the organizations had worked very hard over the years to keep themselves afloat and operational, adding that when the commissioner comes for familiarization he would see things for himself and assured him of the readiness of the agencies to support him to succeed.

In his goodwill message, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Alh. Abdul Idris said media is key to good governance if well utilized, and assured the new commissioner of the support and co-operation of all Journalists in the state.
