Team Niger had so far recorded two gold and one silver medals at the ongoing National Youths Games (NYG) taking place at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State.

The duo of Charity Joseph and Kelechi Ndukauba gave Team Niger the gold medals in the women Beach Volleyball event, winning all the four matches they played. The Beach Volleyball game is played by two players each as against the six in the usual volleyball event.

Bashir Ibrahim gave Team Niger the second gold medal in 55kg male category of wrestling event. Bashir beats his counterpart from Bauchi state to emerge the overall winner of the category.

The state had also gotten a silver medal in Shotput event where it competed with teams from Kaduna, Oyo, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Imo, Delta, Bayelsa, Ogun, Ondo and host Kwara. FCT came first while Delta came third.

Team Niger Squash team is also through to the Semi Final stage after defeating Team Delta, Osun, Kwara and others. At this stage the team is sure of having a medal because the stage is tagged as medal stage in the game of Squash.

The state handball team is also through to the semi-final stage of the handball event. The team defeated Sokoto team by 19-15 in its first game and also defeated the host team, Kwara, by 28-21 in the second game yesterday.

Team Niger lost out to Team Ogun in the Quarter Finals stage of Golf event. Team Niger earlier on beat Nassarawa and host state, Kwara to reach the Quarter Finals stage where it lost out yesterday.

Meanwhile, Niger state Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Mamman Musa has reassured the Team Niger contingent at the ongoing National Youths Games in Ilorin, of the state government support so that they can succeed in the championship.

The Commissioner stated this while addressing the Team Niger Handball team before their second group match against the host state team, Kwara state.

He noted the sacrifice the contingent have made for the state, saying all Nigerlites back home were proud of the entire members of Team Niger and that the state government will do everything humanly possible to appreciate their sacrifice to the state.

“I want to on behalf of Mr. Governor, Alh. Abubakar Sani Bello and the entire Nigerlites appreciate you for your sacrifice and doing the state proud. I want to assure you that your sacrifice will not go unrewarded,” the Commissioner assured.

The Commissioner also appreciated the spirit of team work the contingent was working on and urged them to continue in that manner, saying “a victory for one is victory for all.”
